Bob Dylan is at work on the second volume of his autobiography, his publishers Simon & Schuster have confirmed in the wake of his Pulitzer Prize citation this week.Having had some experience with the publishing industry, I'll note that it's highly unlikely that Chronicles: Volume Two would be published this year even if Dylan delivered a completed manuscript between now and May. Sometime in 2009 would be a more likely bet.
It is understood that Dylan is spending the seven week lay-off between the end of his last American tour and the start of his European tour in May to work on “Chronicles Volume Two”.
No publication date has yet been announced, but there is speculation that it will appear before the end of the year.
The first instalment of Dylan’s planned 3-part autobiography, “Chronicles: Volume One”, spent 19 weeks on the New York Times best-seller list and was one of five finalists for the American National Book Critics Circle Award in 2004.
"Most people who write about music, they have no idea what it feels like to play it. But with the book I wrote, I thought, ‘The people who are writing reviews of this book, man, they know what the hell they’re talking about.’ It spoils you … they know more about it than me,” said Dylan in an interview with Rolling Stone, shortly after the release of Volume I.
“The reviews of this book, some of ’em almost made me cry—in a good way. I’d never felt that from a music critic ever."
There are also strong but as yet unconfirmed rumours that Dylan will tour the UK in the second half of July, following the completion of 29 dates in mainland Europe.
Dylan was awarded an honorary Pulitzer Prize on Tuesday (April 8) at the annual ceremony hosted by Colombia University in the US.
A Special Citation was awarded to Bob Dylan for "his profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power."
But the mere fact that he's working on the second volume - or even at least considering starting work on it - is very welcome news.

‘Bob Dylan Miracle Manuscript’
It’s about time Rock took it’s rightful place in the long list of Pulitzer Prize winners. I would like to commend the Pulitzer Prize committee for their wise choice. Not since Wynton Marsalis won the award has this Jazz and Blues Lady been so elated. Bob Dylan’s thoughtful and passionate work chills my heart, soul and often makes me cry.
As I watched the Pulitzer Prize awards programmes I reflected back to the time when my late husband Hans Marius Stormoen and I were translating Bob Dylan’s book Chronicles-volume one into Norwegian. While watching his modest acceptance speech, I felt as if I knew Bob just a bit more as a human being. It didn’t seem as if the award was a big deal at all.
I look forward to Chronicles-volume two and agree that it won’t be out this year. Dylan has more than one side and his un-edited manuscript for Chronicles - volume one captures that with all its rapture. Check out part two of my saga; ‘Bob Dylan Miracle Manuscript’ at www.kongoi.com/latest/bob-dylan-s-miracle-manuscript-up-for-sale.html
The sample page on http://www.positively-bobdylan.com/ that I have released is a gift to all Bob’s fans. I hope you all will have a deeper insight to the man, the legend, and Dylan the industry.
In the un-edited Chronicles volume one manuscript; From mouth to pen he said what he meant in his straightforward and yes his sometimes-cryptic manner until the publishers edited it and cleaned it up before releasing it to the world. Dylan has more than one side and the un-edited version of Chronicles-volume one captures that with all its rapture. I hope that Simon and Schuster does a better fact checking job on important issues but at the same time that they won’t be so dogmatic in their editing in the forth coming Chronicle books. Bob says all the time that he’s just a man so why not reveal that, he, like the rest of us makes mistakes.
